Hidden beneath the limestone cliffs of Jamaica’s north coast, Green Grotto Caves is a labyrinth of passageways, towering chambers, and secret pools shaped over thousands of years. Named for the green algae that cloak its walls, this flank-margin cave system stretches for more than a kilometre and holds a glass-still underground lake at its heart.

But Green Grotto is more than geology – it’s a living archive of Jamaica’s layered story. The first known inhabitants, the Tainos, once used these caves for shelter and ceremony. Centuries later, Spanish settlers hid here as the British advanced, enslaved Africans and runaway slaves sought refuge in the darkness, and smugglers slipped through tunnels with weapons bound for Cuba. In World War II, barrels of rum were stored at the cave’s entrance, adding yet another chapter to its legend.
